Beauty Must-Have: These Matte Lipsticks Are Full Of Surprises
There's something you need to know about me before we even get into the nitty-gritty of why these lipsticks rock: I usually loathe matte lipstick. I can't wear it. I've tried 99% of the formulas out there (including, yes, Kylie Cosmetics), hoping to find the one that works for me. My lips are often dry and flaky, they're small, and I rather enjoy the feeling of a slick lip balm. Matte lipstick doesn't help with any of that. It's a good thing I didn't give up the search altogether, because it lead me to these: the best matte liquid lipsticks I have tried to date, and they're fromVictoria's Secret? I mean— really?
The new Velvet Matte Cream Lip Stains are the first color cosmetics launch from Victoria's Secret in years (they discontinued their makeup a while back). The lipsticks come in five go-to shades we all need: Perfection (nude rose), Desire (classic red), Drama (eggplant), Obsessed (fuchsia), and Adored (pinky nude). You're going to want to wear all five. The mousse-like formula is a little thick, so it's best to wipe off the excess on the tube before swiping the applicator on your lips. It glides on really creamy and opaque, so there's no need to apply more than one coat (unless you want to). The lipsticks look a little shiny at first but they quickly dry down to a finish that's matte, but not so matte that they suck out all your moisture. The formula leaves a cushiony feel for hours, which is probably why I love it so much as a lip balm aficionado. You can thank the olive oil and vitamin E in the formula for that.
The other plus is that there is no discernible fragrance, other than the basic smell of lipstick. I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't reek of vanilla frosting. But perhaps my favorite thing is what happens after you wear them for a several hours. Usually, matte lipsticks will start to wear down in patches and leave a ring of color around my lips (not unlike really bad liner). Or, the formula will wash away from my inner waterline and leave me with an accidental ombré situation. I hate both of these outcomes. With the Velvet Matte Lip Stains, the creaminess of the formula wears down but leaves behind a weightless stain of color (hence why stain is in the name). Basically, the shade will continue to stay locked on to your lips until you wash your face at the end of the day, which is no small feat. And this bears repeating: it does all of this without drying out your lips.
If you're already on your way to your nearest Victoria's Secret store, pause for one second. These lipsticks won't hit the shelves until October 18. But if you're a fan of any and all lipsticks, you're going to want to get your hands on these asap.
Victoria's Secret Velvet Matte Cream Lip Stain, , available October 18.
